All Natural Perfumes You Need to Own

Every time I smell Secret Wish by Anna Sui I am whisked away to London, Paris, Budapest, Prague, Amsterdam…  It was the perfume I exclusively wore when I went on my first major trip overseas when I was 22.  Secret Wish is still to this day my favourite perfume because of those lovely reminders I get every time I wear it.

Scent Related Memory

Our olfactory receptors are directly connected to the limbic system, the most ancient and primitive part of the brain, which is thought to be the seat of emotion. Smell sensations are relayed to the cortex, where ‘cognitive’ recognition occurs, only after the deepest parts of our brains have been stimulated. Thus, by the time we correctly name a particular scent as, for example, ‘vanilla’, the scent has already activated the limbic system, triggering more deep-seated emotional responses.

More like chemical related memory…

Now I know what types of ingredients go into perfumes/fragrances/colognes: Parabens, phthalates, ethanol, formaldehyde, synthetic musks.  95% of the chemicals in most commercial fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum and natural gas, known as petrochemicals. On average, 80% of fragrance formulations are comprised of these chemicals and in some cases, 100% of a formula can be synthetic.

To protect trade secrets, companies are permitted by the FDA to withhold fragrance ingredients, so consumers can’t rely on labels to know what hazards may lurk inside their bottle of perfume. That gives companies the freedom to load some fragrances with secret chemicals, sensitizers, potential hormone disruptors and chemicals not assessed for safety.

I would prefer that my memories get triggered by beautiful natural scents as opposed to chemicals.  Sadly for me, Secret Wish is going on the chopping block but see my list of all natural perfume brands that I hope to also find my new favourite perfume.

  1. I’m taking a break from perfumes, because they are so expensive xD but this is such a great list!

    1. I usually only get perfumes for a present otherwise I can never be bothered! Thanks for your comment!

    1. I haven’t tried that scent, but the Leahlani brand is top quality and I don’t think you would be disappointed.

  2. I have to admit I had never heard of these. I’m currently alternating between Jo Malone fragrances and a blend of essential oils from DoTerra. I love the warmer fragrances, and have found the essential oils actually last longer. I’m going to look into these.

    1. I should have added EOs to my list! I have never used them as a perfume before, I think I will give it a go though.

  3. Thanks for this list! I haven’t worn perfume in years because of all the chemicals that go into them. I will have to check some of these out.

  4. This is such a great list! I’d love to smell some of these!! It is amazing how certain scents trigger our memories !!!

    1. I never thought about it until I had kids and wouldn’t put chemical-laden products on them. So in turn stopped using chemical-laden products on myself!
