Using Essential Oils to Help with a Life Less Medicated

As a follow-up to my post on living A Life Less Medicated I am now going into detail on the new all-natural methods on how I am dealing with depression.  This is the third in the series, the first being a whole foods diet, the second using exercise.

For this post I will be talking about all the benefits of using essential oils to help with the battle with depression.  I have blends to diffuse when I am having a down day, when I am going to sleep and for when I am anxious.  Stress and anxiety are common companions to depression and I find myself reaching for the essential oils when I am having a stressful day.

How does using Essential Oils help with Depression?

In clinical trials, essential oils have been proven to elevate your mood.  Because smells are carried directly to the brain, they serve as emotional triggers. The limbic system evaluates the sensory stimuli, registering pleasure, pain, danger or safety. This then creates and ultimately directs our emotional response, which can include feelings of fear, anger, depression and attraction.

Our basic emotions and hormonal balance are in response to the most basic smells. This makes scents very powerful in our day-to-day lives because they’re a direct pathway to memory and emotion — which is why they can fight depression and anxiety.

A  2008 study with 58 hospice patients presented some interesting conclusions about the effectiveness of using essential oils for depression. The hospice patients were given hand massages once a day for one week with an essential oil blend in 1.5 percent dilution with sweet almond oil. The essential oil blend consisted of these essential oils in equal ratios:

  • bergamot C. aurantium var. bergamia
  • frankincense Boswellia carterii (Birdw.)
  • lavender Lavandula angustifolia (Mill.)

All patients who received the aromatherapy hand massage reported less pain and depression with the conclusion that aromatherapy massage with this essential oil blend is more effective for pain

and depression management than massage alone.

Thanks Dr Axe for that information, see more here.

If you still don’t believe me about the power of essential oils and aromatherapy, just think about your favourite perfume.  Tell me how you feel when you first put it on?  Does it evoke happy memories?  Does it make you feel a certain positive emotion?  I know when I put on Secret Wish by Anna Sui (my favourite perfume) I am transported to Europe when that was the only perfume I wore.  I am flooded with happy memories of my time in Europe and I feel happy.  Truly happy.

The best Essential Oils to help with Depression

Bergamot is a very uplifting essential oil.  It has the power to brighten your mood and calm your mind.

Lavender is very helpful to help you sleep and relieve anxiety.  It is calming, balancing and relaxing which is perfect to help even out your mood and lower your stress levels.

Everyone knows how calming a cup of chamomile tea can be.  The essential oil is just as calming and is a great help, along with Lavender, at helping a restless mind be at peace to help with sleep.

Cedarwood has a grounding aroma that evokes feelings of wellness and vitality.  It is great at soothing the mind and body and balancing the emotions.

Frankincense oil immediately induces the feeling of peace, relaxation and satisfaction. It also awakens insight, makes you more introspective and lowers anxiety, anger and stress.

My absolute favourite scent and essential oil.  It helps to get over the feelings of sadness or loss and fills you with new hope.  It uplifts mood, drives away disappointment, and relaxes tension in the majority of people, even if they are being treated for something else.

I buy all of my oils now from Pacific Scents on the sunny Gold Coast in Australia who have operated since 2001.  They are a boutique business who make sure they keep up their exclusive range as they believe each person is unique!  Their principal clients are cosmetic and perfume companies in Europe and Asia, and are now proud to offer their range for buy directly online!  They offer a huge range of high quality essential oils, most of which are organic in origin, as well as carrier oils, perfume, floral water, skin care, tea and other accessories.

There are many ways to use essential oils:

  • Add it to a warm bath.
  • Use directly on your skin by way of a compress, massage (using a carrier oil) or a roller ball bottle.
  • Inhalation.
  • Added into your skin care.

But my favourite way to use my essential oils is by diffusing them into the room.  Once again, a few different options of diffusing them.  A few of which are, using a vaporizer – electric or ultra sonic.  A tea-light diffuser.  Or a good old-fashioned candle.

But my pick of the bunch is a nebulising diffuser.  For months I have used an ultra-sonic vaporizer until a couple of weeks ago when I got my nebulising diffuser by Organic Aromas.  I thought the vaporizer did a pretty good job until I turned on my beautiful new diffuser.  Wow, what a difference!

Organic Aromas Nebulising Diffusers

Using nothing but pressurized air and a combination of delicately hand-blown pyrex glass paired with an elegant hand-crafted plantation hardwood base, the Nebulizing Diffuser by Organic Aromas is the best choice for those who wish to experience the fantastic aroma and full health value of only pure essential oil.  This unique device is entirely safe, extremely quiet, makes no mess, requires no heat and does not use any water.

How it works:

Unlike the wide variety of heated units and multitude of plastic, humidifier diffusers that litter the market today, ours works without the need to heat up the oils and without the need to add water to the diffuser.  The Organic Aromas Nebulizing Aromatherapy diffuser works by using what is known as the Bernoulli principle, a theorem of fluid dynamics that provides the best results when diffusing essential oil. Here are the basics of the process.

  1. When an air current is forced through a small tube, the velocity is increased while the pressure at the exit point is reduced.
  2. That difference in pressure creates a kind of suction that causes the essential oils within a separate glass tube to rise upwards.
  3. As the essential oil rises, a stream of pressurized air hits the essential oil and causes it to atomize into micro particles that fill the glass reservoir.
  4. Once in the glass reservoir, those tiny particles rise up and are emitted out of the glass cap in a (waterless) mist that is released into the local environment.
  5. The remaining particles of essential oil return to the bottom of the diffuser creating a cycle that will repeat until the oil has been used up completely.

There are many benefits to using this nebulising diffuser over other methods:

  • It is completely safe and does not use any heat and does not contain plastic.
  • The diffuser is completely quiet.  You can be sitting right next to it and you don’t hear a thing.
  • Only uses a small amount of electricity.
  • Provides a widespread area of dispersal.  I have my diffuser downstairs in a large rumpus room and I can smell the oils from upstairs.
  • Does not add moisture or humidity to the room.
  • Most importantly, you are not diluting the essential oils with water as you do with a vaporizer.  So you are getting the full effect of the essential oils.

I had a headache the other day and decided to use my new diffuser with my headache relief blend of Lavender, Lemon, Lime and Peppermint.  My headache was gone within an hour.  I have used the same blend with my old vaporizer and it did nothing.  So that was enough to convince me these are the real deal and allow the essential oils to work their magic.

And just the diffuser alone is such a lovely decor item on its own, with the dainty glass reservoir and solid, hardwood base, it looks stunning in any room.

Organic Aromas are based in the United States and offer essential oils so for my readers in the States please check out their oils here if the Land of Oz is too far to go for your Essential Oils.

Next time you are having a down day try using some of the essential oils I listed above to help lift your mood.  Play around with the blends until you get one that is right for you.

For those of you who already use essential oils, what are your favourite blends?  And what is it to help with?

  3. I love essential oils! They are good for everything. I have tried Cedar and Lavender and love them, but haven’t tried the others yet. I am definitely adding these to my list.

  4. I’ve began reading up on essential oils. They do so much for the body it’s amazing. I was surprised when I learned of people who don’t take medicine anymore. Thanks for the oil description & use-I really need something like this.
