I finally got time off kid duty to go visit one of my favourite stores, Biome Eco Stores! I have ordered a few times online but never visited one of their 4 stores across Brisbane. (kids = mini bulls in a china shop..) I visited their Balmoral store, and their innovative new concept, the Naked Beauty Bar.
A Do It Yourself Skin Care Lover’s Delight!
The Naked Beauty Bar offers a huge range of natural beauty ingredients in bulk, so you can buy just the amount you need. With the help of a sales assistant you can pick out a recipe, the exact ingredients and a jar to put them in. Or you can bring your own jars! The options are endless, you can just stock up on some staples, choose one of your own recipes or they offer a large range of recipes to choose from. The sales assistants are very knowledgable so if you need information about an ingredient they are more than willing to help. I was like a kid in a candy shop, there was so many ingredients I wanted to buy and lots of recipes I wanted to try. In the end I settled on a lip balm recipe, but more about that later.
Biome Eco Stores uphold very high standards both in quality of the ingredients and in the ethical standings of where and how these ingredients are sourced. They are rigorous in maintaining the core values of their company and are vigilant in making sure that they are always offering the best products to their customers. This is one of the reasons I continually go back to this store (online anyway) is because I know that I don’t have to cross-examine the products they sell with EWG and Choose Cruelty Free websites and good old Google. I trust this company to always sell products and ingredients that are ethically, sustainably and organically viable.
Zero Waste & Ethical Superstars
So after I had my fun investigating all the ingredients at their Naked Beauty Bar I went around the rest of the store. Big Mistake!! I couldn’t stop myself from spending up big. The Balmoral store is set up in a visually appealing way and is easy to navigate. I spent almost an hour wandering around looking at everything.
I settled on a few things I really needed and a few I wanted to try out for the first time.
I got the ingredients for my DIY Orange & Cinnamon lip balm. Laundry liquid that they will no longer be stocking as the store will no longer be stocking any products with Palm Oil, even ethically sourced Palm Oil. Desert shadow hair colour, see my review of this product here. Activated Charcoal Powder for some teeth whitening/DIY toothpaste and a bamboo toothbrush. Hemp Oil which is fantastic for your skin (see my other recommendations for face oils here). And doggie-do waste bags, biodegradable of course (I will be doing a post on eco-friendly pet products in the coming weeks).
Orange & Cinnamon Lip Balm
You only need 5 ingredients and 10 minutes of your time to make 15 x 15ml lip balms!! The recipe is super easy and all you need is Shea Butter, Beeswax, Coconut Oil and some drops of your favourite essential oils. I went with orange and cinnamon as suggested on the Biome website. Not my normal choice but I was feeling adventurous and wanted to try something different. I am glad I did, it smells GREAT!
After you melt your ingredients down in a double-boiler, add the essential oils and pour the mixture into your containers. I had a couple of 20g glass bottles that I poured mine into.
And you have yourself a wonderful smelling, extremely moisturing lip balm!
My Final Thoughts
Modern skin care has lost its way with complicated, mostly petrochemical-derived ingredients. Here we show you how simple it can be to make you own zero waste, plastic free skin care – so you know exactly what you are putting on your skin! – Biome’s Website
If you are struggling to wade through the greenwashing of big name brands to find skin care that is truly all natural then you can trust Biome Eco Stores to steer you in the right direction. Or better yet they can help you make your own skin care products with their revolutionary concept of the Naked Beauty Bar. I loved using this feature at the Balmoral store and the store in general. They have so many great quality and well priced products and ingredients that I will be going back very soon… Sooner than my husband would like I am sure!
As I was finishing up my purchases with Charlotte the helpful sales person, we were discussing all the things that are possible using the ingredients they offer at their Naked Beauty Bar. She exclaimed that “there was nothing you can’t do”. She is so very right. I think we have all become accustomed to living a convenience-filled life that we expect everything to just be sitting there waiting for us to use. There is never enough time to get everything done. But as you can see above, making an all natural DIY lip balm took 10 minutes out of my day and is going to last me for months and months.
So I think this concept that Biome Eco Stores has created is more than just knowing what you are putting in your skin care. I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and achievement just from making a lip balm. Which brings me back to my point that we are so used to a convenience-filled world that making something so small as your own skin care is a life-changing experience.
So I want to thank Biome Eco Stores for helping to contribute to a movement away from a conventional, convenience-filled, unethical lifestyle. With such a simple concept of making your own skin care using your Naked Beauty Bar you are making people aware of a better, healthier, simpler way of life. A way of life that I think that many people in this world sorely need.
Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, and that means I earn some commission if you purchase through my links. No worries, I only recommend products that I like, and feel that you would find useful. I was invited by Biome to try their Naked Beauty Bar, but this post is an honest reflection of my experience – many of my earlier posts on this website and my social media feature items from their store. So you can rest assured that I am a long time supporter of this company and would never recommend anything to my readers that I would not use myself.
